Trip start – April 3rd 2011!

We have started planning our 6 month trip through Southern Africa.

Our plan at this stage is to spend 6 months travelling through the southern part of Africa – South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland,  Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzani and Kenya. If the money holds up, we’d also like to take a flight up to Egypt from Nairobi.

This will be our third trip to Africa, but this time we will be on our own and have the luxury of time to travel at a much slower pace and to stay where we want to when we want to.  Travelling on our own though means there are so many things to organise before we leave. From a vehicle, to 4wd driver and recovery training, first aid, vaccinations, route planning, GPS, satellite phones, budget, maps, insurance – the list goes on! Hopefully we can share some of our learnings on this website.

  1. Hi,
You’ll enjoy Namibia, great scenery and its probably the safest place in Africa.
Try and walk Fish River Canyon if you get the chance (I’m thinking of going over next year just to do that). It’s open from around May for 5 months or so depending on the weather. You generally can’t just turn up and walk it – more prep for you I’m afraid. A few companies run guided walks for the 4-5 days and may also be able to safely store your 4wd for you. One of the really great things at Namibia I found was that you won’t run into too many other NZ’rs and Aussies (or at least that was the case when I was there some years back). It seems to mostly get Europeans – especially Germans as they once ran the place.

  2. Hi Mike
Thanks for the info, although not too sure my old body will take a 4 day hike! Can’t wait for April to be here so we can get on our way.
